MSU Celebrating the Return of Alumni Artist, Brooks Frederick Written by Ben Cross Brooks Frederick graduated from MSU in the winter of 1999 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. Since then, he has taken up residence in Brooklyn, New York and continued his studies. His work has proven a level of mastery warranting a Masters of Fine Arts as awarded by The New York Academy of Art and an Adjunct professorship at both Brooklyn College and Adelphi University. Fredericks presence and position at these institutions have allowed him to engineer a conduit of artistic expression and ideas between Lake Charles and Brooklyn. He has been instrumental in creating a forum for many of McNeeses student artists to display their work to New York audiences. The concept of a link between New York and Louisiana seems to be at the heart of this artist and the shapes of much of his work. Fifty-two pieces of Brooks Fredericks most recent works are being displayed in the Abercombie Gallery on the MSU campus from the 17th of January through Valentines Day as part of the 24th Annual Exhibition Season. A closing reception will be held on the 14th of February from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and a lecture will be given by the artist. It is nearly impossible to eloquently describe the sprawling variety of this show. The detail of many of the pieces ranges from razor-like sharpness to impressionistic disembodied forms. The subject matter of the show is both vast and poignantly intimate; the use of color and gesture weave through the tapestry of his work tying together incomprehensible distances in a full range of genres without ever once feeling disjointed or choppy. A harmonic bass line, rich and subtle and often percussive, vibes through the entire exhibit leaving those who choose to experience it, from the Big Easy to the Big Apple, tapping their feet in time.
