Brooks Frederick Artist Statement

appearance of things, but their inward significance.”

My current body of work is an attempt to find the spiritual through the material.

My aim is to reveal the inward significance through the outward appearance.

My painting process resembles meditation.  I sit and wait for my subjects to reveal themselves to me.

My mind quiets itself. Light falls upon the objects and faces, dissolves form, reveals it…I paint when I am quiet and at peace.

My iconography some personal, some borrowed, has become the main tool in my attempts to express the spiritual and reconcile it with the material, the sensual.
